Teeth whitening
Teeth whitening is a process during which the color of your teeth is changed. If it is correctly indicated and always led by a dentist, it can never be a harmful process in any way. There are, however, rules under which whitening can be done.
There are basically two methods of whitening: at home and at the surgery. The main difference is in the number of applications and the concentration of the active substance. The final outcome is more or less the same with both methods. Whether whitening can be done is what the dentist will discover through an examination, which also determines which method of whitening is the most suitable for you.
The whitening gel can influence only the color of real dental tissue. It has no impact on the color of white fillings and crowns. However, owing to the brightening of the neighboring teeth, a certain optical darkening of the current fillings and crowns might occur. If their color does not match, they need to be remade. This cannot be done sooner than 2 to 3 weeks after the last application of the whitening gel. The reason for this is the right link of the filling material. The final color is impossible to determined in advance due to the genetically given color of the dentine, which the process does not influence much, so it depends on the initial color of the tooth. Approximately 2% of the population is resistant to any whitening.
Throughout the process of whitening, it is necessary to keep a so-called white diet. This means throughout the whitening and for at least 14 days after, it is necessary to avoid cigarettes, coffee, tea, red wine, blueberries, in short any food which can cause coloring of your teeth. Nicotine in particular returns the teeth back to their original color relatively quickly.
In conclusion, it is necessary to call your attention to several phenomena that are associated with whitening and can be more or less expressed:
- First and foremost, the sensitivity of teeth, which is apparent with home whitening within 3 to 4 days of first using the whitening gel; then disappears
- With the surgery whitening, this sensitivity is experienced for 2 to 3 days after the operation and it disappears within a week. This phenomenon can be, however, influenced and minimised by following instructions from the dentist
- A temporary marking of so-called fluoride stains, which are mostly whitish little stains caused by the change of mineralization of the enamel during its creation in childhood.
- A temporary so-called "non-whitening of cervices" of the whitened teeth caused by a barrier, which protects soft tissues from the whitening gel. This difference in color will go away within several days.
