Paradentosis (Parodontitis)
This is an inflammatory ailment, which affects tissues in the neighborhood of a tooth, such as gum, bone, odontobothrion and suspensory apparatus (anchors teeth in the bone socket).
It is triggered by the presence of bacterial plaque (that covers the surface of teeth, or the surface of dental substances). /p>
The products of metabolism of bacteria (toxins) and the reaction of the immune system cause bone loss, destruction of the suspensory apparatus, which shows itself in the mouth by a rise and extension of a paradontitis pocket (a pocket along the tooth originating as a result of decrease of tissues), unfolding of cervices, and in advanced stages, the loosening of teeth and their “wandering”, (resulting in gaps in the dentice).
Without appropriate therapy, this process can eventually lead to the loss of teeth.
It especially occurs in adults; up to 90% of people are affected.
Appropriate treatment consists particularly of reducing (decreasing the volume of) the amount of bacteria present in the neighborhood of the tooth and checking risk factors (smoking, genetic factors). It is therefore desirable to go to the surgery regularly.
At the first appointment, the patient is informed about the state and level of the ailment, and a customized plan of treatment is set up. The first step is the treatment by the dental hygienist, who will thoroughly remove bacterial plaque and tartar. She initiates the treatment. After completing the intensive hygienic stage, the patient is invited back to a check-up after 2 to 6 months.
In the case of an advanced stage of paradentosis, the patient will be referred over to the care of a specialist, a paradentologist.
Paradentosis as an infection under the gums and loosely “wandering” in the bone increases the risk of arteriosclerosis (plugging of blood vessels), respiratory track disease and also risk to the cardiovascular system (heart, blood vessels). There is also unambiguous evidence that paradentosis can lead to both premature birth and the reduced birth weight of the newborn.
With a patient with full set of teeth (28), the total area of bacterial plaque can reach up to 72 sq centimeters, which is approximately the size of the area of the back of a hand of an adult. That shows an enormous load of bacteria and their products. Also, during regular chewing (owing to close contact of the plaque and epithelium of vessels) there can be a load of bacteria (the bloodstream is flooded with bacteria), which means complications, such as the inflammation of the cardiac valve and other severe ailments.
In conclusion, it must be stressed that inflammations in the neighborhood of a tooth (paradentosis) or caries are not natural constituents of the oral cavity and their rise can be successfully prevented by good oral hygiene.
The dental hygienist will inform you of the proper technique for brushing and will also choose suitable tools especially for you.
