Caries
This is an infliction of hard dental tissue. The activity of bacterial plaque causes the loss of mineral substances (so called demineralization) from the enamel layer (the strongly mineralized surface layer of a tooth). The release of the minerals is caused by acids, which originate as a product of glycolysis from food.
At the initial stage of the caries (the caries does not extend beyond the enamel-dentine border), it is possible to attempt rectification without drilling and making a filling.
This is an ideal reason come to the surgery regularly. Only during a careful preventative check-up (inclusive with intraoral pictures of intradental space), it is possible to detect the beginning caries. The solution is detailed instructions for the motivation of the patient to follow up with one’s own hygiene, and a thorough cleaning at the surgery with the focus on removing all of the plaque and tartar. At the end of the check-up, there is so called fluoridation (using preparations with high contents of fluoride ions, which enable remineralization or return of minerals into the places where they were lost).
The above described treatment in the surgery is followed by thorough home hygiene.
With the condition of the caries getting deeper and extending into the dentine, it is essential to drill away the afflicted tissues and substitute the missing part of the tooth with a filling. The speed of the spread of caries is solely individual. Generally speaking, with older patients caries spreads more slowly, and with deciduous teeth the spread of caries is much more rapid.
With advanced stages of caries, there are often complications, such as inflammation of the dental pulp. This occurs when the caries has not been removed in a timely manner, and it is penetrating into the pulp cavity to the dental pulp, simply said “to the nerve” (the vital tissue inside the tooth, nurturing and innerving the tooth) and causes necrosis of the dental pulp.
The solution is top quality treatment of the root canals (endodontics),
