Inlay, onlay
These are ceramic substitutes that reconstruct advanced defects of distal teeth. They represent a continual transition between the treatment of a tooth with a plain filling and the treatment with an artificial crown. They are a suitable alternative to extended composite fillings and a fully suitable alternative to extended amalgam annexes.
Good hygiene and the patient’s cooperation are a pre-requisite. There is some grinding of the tooth for the reduction of dental tissue, which in the case of a tooth for a crown is necessarily quite extensive, but the treatment of a tooth with an inlay or onlay is more sparing. Another pre-requisite is that the tooth must be alive (vital).
Two appointments at the surgery are again necessary. At the first appointment, the teeth are ground, imprinted and sealed with a temporary filling for the short term. At the next appointment, ceramic inlays/onlays made in a laboratory are cemented onto the adjusted surface of the tooth.
