Dental implants

Dental implants are full-fledged substitutes for missing teeth and in comparison to other substitutes (bridgework, removable substitutes) they have a number of advantages. It is not necessary to grind the neighboring teeth for a crown (which is a disadvantage of bridgework), neither is it necessary to have them adjusted.

A dental implant - is a titanium cylinder with spirals similar to a screw. Titanium is made of a titanium alloy and it has bio-inert features (the body does not take it as something alien; it does not reject it). This gives implants their most excellent feature, which is their ability to integrate (to grow into the bone).

It is applied into the bone at the point of a lost tooth. It replaces the root of the tooth and also serves as the anchoring pillar onto which a secondary part (abutment) can be screwed, which can then be set with either a crown or bridgework.

After application, the implant, complete with a screw, is covered and given 2-3 months to heal into the bone. When the set healing time period is over, the entry into the implant is uncovered and imprinted. In a laboratory, a secondary part (abutment) is chosen based on the plaster model and an artificial crown is made, which is then cemented onto the abutment, or possibly screwed on it.

ImplantsWith patients whose bone is insufficient, the bone is appended (so called augmentation) at the point of implantation. It is an operation that extends the complete treatment by 3-4 months. It is usually done with local anesthesia; with longer operations, it is possible to do the treatment with analgosedation (with the assistance of an anesthesiologist, drugs that cause a light sleep are administered through a vein of the patient).

There is only a small group of patients who cannot undergo implantation. These are patients who suffer from severe system diseases and serious diseases of the immune system.

The implantation itself is preceded by a detailed examination by a specialist, who suggests a treatment plan and informs the patient of all circumstances of the treatment, including potential complications. Only a totally informed patient who is aware of all the details can undergo the suggested operation.

It is possible to substitute various amounts of teeth:

  • substitution of one tooth
  • substitution of several teeth
  • treatment of a toothless jaw

In conclusion, this is the substitution of a tooth that could only be bettered by a tooth “cultivated” out of the own stem cells of the patient, which is a futuristic fantasy.
